The Cellar Bar @ The Merrion Hotel Dublin, Ireland

Originally we wanted to have Christmas Brunch at Balfes, but unfortunately they were fully booked.

We went to the Cellar Bar & Restaurant at The Merrion Hotel and were lucky. They had a table available for us.

The Cellar Bar is located in the cellars of the main building of the hotel. It is an 18th century Georgian house and the cellar is magnificent, looking rustic with exposed bricks, arches and very thick walls.

We had a large table for two. The bar was already full, but the staff managed the crowd well.

Fellow diners were other couples and families, some with very small children, others with teenagers.  All of them were well behaved and the atmosphere was good.

Our waitress was attentive and no matter how busy it got, she was there when we needed her.

We ordered a large bottle of still water, a Red Nose Reindeer Cocktail, an Espresso Martini and a Cappuccino.

The Red Nose Reindeer was a Christmas special and contained Makers Mark, orange juice, grenadine and lemonade.

The Espresso Martini was made with Illy Coffee Liquor. It was delicious.

The Cappuccino was creamy and smooth, so very good as well.

He had a three course meal, while I had a two course.

He started with leek and potato soup. It was smooth and tasty.

Next came the pasta with aubergine, ricotta and tomato sauce and the steak sandwich. When ordering the sandwich I was offered fries or crisps. Since I'm not a fan, I received a generous portion of salad instead without prompting.
We liked both dishes. The steak sandwich was moreish and especially delicious thanks to the roasted onion and saffron mayonnaise.

Our desserts were a slice of Coolattin Cheese with condiments, mango sorbet and a glazed chocolate dome with clementine coulis. As always the dessert was the highlight.

The friendly staff found also time for a quick chat, but was never intrusive. That's how we love it.

The bill came in at 76 Euro (ca. 95 USD).

Would we return? Yes, it was worth our time and money.

Punished Together

Frieda Noose was searching frantically for her children. They had vanished during a shopping trip. She was worried something had happened to Sol and Casey. Frieda found out to her dismay they had hidden from her, but watched her closely and had some fun. Frieda wasn't amused. In fact she was fuming and barely kept her temper in check. Frieda was glad she had herself under control. The temptation to smack her seven and a half year old daughter and four year old son was there. Instead Frieda grabbed her kids by the hand and left the store with them, walking briskly. She was silent until they reached their car. Frieda barked at her kids: "Get in!" By now Casey and Sol realized their mother was upset with them. When they were all sitting at the back and the doors were closed Frieda started her lecture. "Don't do that ever again! I was so scared you were lost! Casey, you are old enough to know hiding from me is wrong and that I would be worried. Involving your brother is even worse! I'm disappointed in both of you! I'm considering going home immediately..." "But Mommy, you promised us to go to the toy store!" Casey protested. "Didn't I say we would go there, when you are good?" Casey had heard it, but it had gone in one ear and out the other. Sol's eyes filled with tears. He had been looking forward to check out dinosaurs and Lego sets. Suddenly the prank didn't seem that funny and seeing how disappointed their mother was, Sol felt guilty. He climbed on Frieda's lap, snuggled close to her and said: "Sorry, Mommy. I didn't want to scare you. I will be good. I promise." Frieda didn't say a word for a moment. She was still very angry. "It's okay, honey. You made a mistake and hopefully you have learned from it." "Yes, Mommy." Sol replied meekly. They hugged. Frieda turned a gimlet eye to her daughter. "So, Casey, do you think you behaved in such a manner you have earned going to Toys'r'us?" Even if Casey had inherited Frieda's black hair, heart shaped face and brown eyes, she was very similar to Frieda's husband Fin, who could be own minded and stubborn on occasion. Casey didn't want to admit she had done something wrong. She stared at her mother with crossed arms and a scowl on her face. Frieda tried to stay calm. When Casey still didn't answer after a tense silence, Frieda said quiet: "Answer me, please. I'd like to have your opinion." There was a bit of a threat in Frieda's voice, so Casey thought it was better to admit she hadn't been that good behaved, before she made her mother even madder. Frieda could get very unpleasant if she felt she wasn't taken serious. Frieda took into consideration to go to the toy shop, but thought she had to reward and praise appropriate behaviour and to punish serious misdemeanors, so she had to go through with what she had said earlier. Sol burst into tears and Casey sulked. Frieda comforted Sol by saying: "I love you two very much, but you caused me great grief today. Just because we don't go today to see toys doesn't mean we are never going. If you are two little angels for the next few days, I'm sure we can maybe even Daddy convince to go on an outing with us." The promise worked like a treat for Sol. He stopped crying pretty soon, not so with Casey. She refused outright to return to the mall for grocery shopping. Frieda was okay with that. She left Casey with the babysitter service of the mall, which made her daughter not happier. Casey had planned to black mail Frieda, but it had back fired.
Sol wanted to come with Frieda. He liked helping his Mommy fetching and choosing groceries. He generally wasn't holding a long grudge and was easy going like his mother. He looked like a miniature copy of his father.
After the completion of their tasks Sol and Frieda picked up Casey. Frieda had regained her psychological balance again and her anger was gone.

At dinner Casey was still sullen. Knowing her daughter Frieda wasn't surprised. It took Casey a day or two to let go of events that upset her. Fin, who had managed to be home for the meal, but hadn't had time to catch up with Frieda, sensed the undercurrents and was wondering what had happened.
He and Frieda found a quiet moment. Fin wasn't amused about the prank. He understood his wife completely. Whenever the kids misbehaved and Frieda deemed it necessary to net out a punishment, he backed her up.
The kids knew playing out a parent against the other didn't work.
Fin brought the kids to bed and had a chat with Casey. Fin and Casey's thought processes worked similar, so he could easily walk in her shoes. He managed to explain to Casey why Frieda was disappointed and angry and made Casey understand her mother better. It helped keeping the sulking to a minimum and the next morning Casey was back to normal.

Frieda asked Fin after the kids were asleep if he and his brother Mike had ever been punished together. She knew she was walking on treacherous ground and might open old wounds. Fin thought about it for a moment. "Well, let's put it that way we might were in trouble at the same time and sometimes got a warning smack in front of each other, but that was it. In most cases Mike managed to wriggle out of the situation by claiming I was responsible and my parents believed him, so I was the one, who ended up with a sore bottom. I remember only one occasion, when we were both punished for the same thing at roughly the same time, but in separate rooms." "Why were you spanked?" Fin grinned. "Our neighbor, Mike and I were in disagreement. I was around nine and Mike eight. Mike and I loved at the time nothing more than playing soccer in our garden. A few of the shots went wild, and well, the ball ended up in the neighbor's garden. She was an old lady and very proud of her prize winning flowers, so she was very disturbed and annoyed about it. She always swore at us, talked to our parents about it, who told us off, and confiscated our ball, when it happened again. Mike and I were very angry about the mistreatment and swore to get revenge. I came up with the idea to climb over the wall and pee on Mrs. Tomczyk's terrace. Stupid - I know." Fin and Frieda giggled. "Mike agreed it was a brilliant idea, so when we both had to wee we sprang into action. As bad luck would have it Mrs. Tomczyk was at home and saw us. She was quite fast I can tell you." Fin smiled at the memory. "We didn't even have a chance to zip up our trousers, she had us grabbed by the ears and we were on our way home. Mom and Dad were outraged about our little prank. They scolded us right in front of Mrs. Tomczyk. Of course we had to apologize and Mrs. Tomczyk was promised we were going to be punished. I knew what it meant for me. I wasn't sure how our parents planned to deal with Mike, though. We were ordered to our rooms. Waiting was awful. I tried to figure out if I was going to allowed to keep on my underpants or if I would be caned on the bare and how many strokes I was going to get. It didn't take long until I heard Mom and Dad approaching. I shivered. Mom entered my room, cane in hand, without knocking. To my surprise she was alone. Normally - no matter who spanked me - both parents were present during my punishment. She told me off about my disgraceful behavior again. I listened with one ear, because I thought I had heard Mike cry out. I heard him again, this time louder, so I knew he was being spanked as well. It was a small comfort. My mother told me to lower my pants and to bend over my writing desk. I only realized then that I had opened my window earlier in the day and hadn't closed it yet. I didn't dare ask my mother to move again. She said: "You are going to get four strokes." I was dreading it and hated the three ft. long cane. It inflicted so much pain." Fin was silent for a moment. His blue grey eyes had changed color and were more blue than grey, a sign he was upset or angry. Fin continued. "Mom was merciless. She brought the cane down with a flick of her wrist, hard. As always for a few seconds I didn't feel anything and then there was the searing pain. Even so I knew what to expect, the stroke took me by surprise and knocked the air out of me. My mother waited until the fire in my behind was a bit subsiding, before she lined up the next lash. The pain from the second stroke merged with the first. It was unbearable and I cried out. My eyes filled with tears. I hoped I could hold them back a bit longer. It didn't work. I burst into tears, when the cane landed at the center of my buttocks. I nearly jumped up, because it hurt a great deal. Holding on for dear life, I waited and waited... Mom took her time. Finally she flicked the cane across my sit spots. I screamed at the top of my lungs and I cried now unrestrained. I was so concentrated on the fire in my behind, I didn't hear Mom telling me I could get up. She repeated herself a couple of times, before my body functioned more normally again. I wasn't happy about Mom's tries to comfort me. When she hugged me I tensed, so she gave up, frustrated. Mom had just hurt and humiliated me, so I thought she was two faced and not serious about consoling me. I was also upset, because I thought it was unfair Mike got away relatively easy. Okay, he got - I would guess - something between eight and sixteen smacks and they definitely hurt, but while his pain was gone by the evening, I was still smarting the next day and it was impossible for me to sit. Any signs of his spanking would have vanished within hours; my tramlines stayed for two weeks. Mike had the higher embarrassment factor, because he was spanked on the bare. Not that my underpants offered a lot of protection from the cane. My brother had the lighter spanker. Dad always was a little bit softer than Mom, but he made me cry as much as Mom did. Of course I couldn't say anything about my feelings. I feared I would make it worse for myself if I would bring it up, so I kept quiet. Like Casey I was holding a long grudge, but I was better than she is. I think on this occasion I ignored my parents for a week." Frieda didn't know if Fin wanted comfort, but thought it couldn't hurt. She put a hand on his tanned arm. "I'm sorry." "Hm, it wasn't the worst caning I've got and one of the fairer ones. Mike and I were so careful afterwards the soccer ball never again ended up in Mrs. Tomczyk's garden, so I guess we both had learned the hard way." Frieda and Fin looked up startled. They thought they had heard Sol sobbing. Frieda went to investigate. She found Sol behind the kitchen door, crying. "What's wrong, honey? Did you have a bad dream?" Frieda crouched down. "I was thirsty and I... I heard what Daddy said." Frieda picked up Sol and brought him to the kitchen. She thought it was better Sol spoke with his father. Depositing Sol on Fin's lap, Frieda made hot chocolate for all of them.
Sol was hugging Fin tightly. "What's bothering you, sweetie?" Fin asked. "Your Mommy and Daddy weren't nice to you." "No, unfortunately they weren't." Fin confirmed. "I'm sad about it." "That's very generous of you, Sol." Fin smiled against his will. He was proud Sol showed empathy. Frieda and he must have done something right. "You don't have to be sad, though. I'm still alive. Growing up the way I did made me decide I wanted to be a different type of father, so all's good." "Don't you miss your Mommy and Daddy?" Since there was no love lost between Fin and his parents and they had parted acrimoniously a long time ago, Fin didn't. "No. It is better for all of us if we don't see each other. We have our own lives." "I would miss you." Sol said seriously. "I would miss you too, sweetie, but we don't want to go different ways, so we don't have to miss each other. Or do you plan to be a big boy and move out tomorrow?" Fin asked with a twinkle in his eyes. Sol giggled. "Noo." He said. "I'm happy to hear it." The hot chocolate was ready and Sol had asked all his questions and seemed satisfied with the answers. After his thirst was quenched he went to bed.
Fin checked later on his sleeping children and was amazed how deep he felt for them. Love was a strange thing. Fin had come a long way. At first he didn't want children. His biggest fear was he would turn out as brutal and uncaring as his parents. Frieda's pregnancy with Casey was an emotional roller coaster ride for Fin, but he fell immediately in love with his daughter when he held her in his arms shortly after she was born. It wasn't the same with Sol. Fin had originally wanted a second daughter and was convinced Sol would be a girl. For about one and a half months Fin had felt betrayed Sol was a boy. Fin realized he was heading down the same path as his parents had with him, corrected his behavior in time and learned to fall in love with his son too. Now living without Sol would have been unthinkable for Fin.

The kids were very well behaved for the next few days, so their reward was to visit the toy shop as promised and their Dad was also coming with them, which was a highlight for them.

Lunch @ Balfes, The Westbury Hotel, Dublin, Ireland

Every year we try to have a pre-Christmas lunch. This time we went to Balfes at the Westbury Hotel, Dublin. We have frequented Balfes for breakfast and brunch before.

We arrived shortly before Midday and were brought to a table near the window.

The staff was totally new to us. All members encountered were friendly, attentive and non-obstructive.

All menus are available online, so we had already checked out what we wanted to have.

Choosing our drinks was easy, but what to have as starter, main course and dessert wasn't so obvious.

We ordered four Chai Latte, two each, one carrot, orange and ginger juice and apple, celery, spinach and kale juice. Later we were told that unfortunately the spinach was not available, but they could make an apple, carrot and kale juice, so I took that. There was no big difference between the juices. Mine was slightly more bitter.

We shared a starter sized chicken salad. It was generous and contained green leaves and guacamole.

Our main courses were two chicken fillets with cassoulet. We were surprised how light the dish was and the meat portion really large, but the chicken was tender and juicy.

A meal wouldn't be complete without a dessert. We had mixed berries with champagne sabayon and Banoffi with hot chocolate mousse. We know both desserts. As always they were delicious. We liked the contrast between ice cold banana and warm chocolate mousse.
The berries with sabayon were delicately flavored and well balanced.

When we arrived the restaurant was empty, but when we left it was nearly full. Having learned this, we might consider booking a table in advance to avoid disappointment.

Noise levels weren't very high, considering how many guests were dining with us.

Overall we had a leisurely lunch and stayed for around two hours.

The cost was 90 Euro (ca. 112.40 USD) excluding tip.

We will be back again.

Lobby Lounge @ The Conrad Dubai, United Arab Emirates

During our stay in Dubai we wanted to check out the new Conrad hotel, located on Sheikh Zayed Road. It had recently opened.

The lobby was large, but somehow felt already outdated, at least to us. For example the reception was straight ahead from the entrance, which is normally more often seen at older properties.

We liked the floor to ceiling windows and the color scheme. The views over the city from the lobby were blocked by the Metro Station, though.

We took a seat at the Lobby Lounge. It took ages for the waiter to arrive and to our surprise told us they didn't have a menu in the sense, only the TWG Tea selection, and no food was served. It was definitely a let-down for us, because we had considered having a snack.

There were a few other groups and couples. I think it was difficult for the waiters to distinguish who was simply waiting for someone without ordering and who wanted to spend money.

The atmosphere overall was not to our taste. It felt more like we were in a train station with people coming and going.

Our waiter was efficient and friendly. I had the TWG Geisha Cherry Blossom Tea and it was one of the best I've ever had. The aroma was delicious. The tea came with biscuits. They were a suitable accompaniment.
My better half chose an orange juice. It was fresh and deemed good too.

The bill came in at 53 AED (ca. 11.60 Euro or 14.50 USD).
Unfortunately we won't return, even so the service is attentive, but the venue isn't to our taste.

Pizza Express Victoria Square, Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom

During our stay in Belfast we tried two Pizza Express, one of our favorite chains in the UK and Ireland for casual meals.

This time around we went to Pizza Express Victoria Square after having been to the one on Bedford Street.

The architecture was completely different. Victoria Square is a very modern shopping mall and one of the best designed in the country, so the Pizza Express was also contemporary and flooded with day light.

It was already busy, but we hadn't any problems getting a table.

We ordered one Elderflower Presse, one orange juice, two hot chocolates, one Leggaria Pizza ad Astra, one Leggaria Pomodoro Pesto, one Leggaria chocolate cheese cake and one Toffee Fudge Glory.

Comparing the chocolate cheese cake with the one from Pizza Express Bedford Street it seemed slightly sweeter at Victoria Square.

It was the first time ever we have been asked our preference for hot chocolate at a Pizza Express outlet (more milk or more cocoa).

The cost was 44 GBP (ca. 56.35 Euro or ca. 70.30 USD).

Service was attentive, but in our opinion slightly too personal. But, that's a personal thing, many others might enjoy the attention.

We will return should we be at Victoria Square again in our future.

Balfes @ The Westbury Dublin, Ireland

Before travelling by long distance bus to Belfast we had breakfast at Balfes, located at the Westbury Hotel, Dublin, Ireland and formerly known as Cafe Novo.

Normally we are frequently going there for the weekend brunch, so breakfast during the week was a new experience for us.

During brunch the whole restaurant is accessible, not so when having breakfast during the week. Only the bar section was open to the public. This was the only thing I disliked. The bar was busy due to some job interviews taking place and other guests. All the low tables were occupied. It left us only high ones and meant sitting on a bench or bar stool. It was a bit uncomfortable for me and the tables are slightly too small.

There was another difference. The portion sizes were much larger at breakfast than it is during brunch.

The service was as always attentive and we were recognized as regulars.

We ordered two Chai Lattes, two Orange, carrot and ginger juices, Eggs Benedict, an omelette with smoked salmon and oat pancakes sweetened with agave syrup. The food was delivered timely and was delicious. The oat pancakes were especially interesting and filling.

The bill came in at 45 Euro (ca. 56.20 USD).

In the future we will return either for breakfast or brunch.

Majlis @ The Ibn Battuta Gate Hotel, Dubai, United Arab Emirates

When we were at the Ibn Battuta Mall we also visited the Ibn Battuta Gate Hotel. It has the largest arch in the world, where the Presidential Suite is located. The hotel is operated by Moevenpick.

We like the Ibn Battuta Gate Hotel, because the Arabic design continues and adds to the architecture of the shopping mall.

We stopped at Majlis for drinks. The first waiter we had was warm and took our order, but left later on.

The second waitress was professional, but not as warm as the first member of staff. Our order arrived correct - one large bottle of still water, one Green Hornet Mocktail and one orange juice. The mocktail and the orange juice were freshly prepared at the bar and were delicious.

The cost was 65 AED (ca. 14.20 Euro / ca. 17.75 USD).

Refreshed we were ready to go on exploring Ibn Battuta Mall further.

Pizza Express Bedford Street, Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom

During our stay in Belfast we went to Pizza Express, Bedford Street on the evening we arrived. This outlet was just across the street from our hotel the Holiday Inn (see also review).

We liked the architecture of the fully restored building. The Pizza Express was in a classic building with three floors and had exposed brick walls.

The staff was warm and efficient at the same time. The restaurant was extremely busy.

We ordered Sicilian lemonade, a raspberry lemonade, Pizza Pollo ad Astra, Pollo Pesto al Forno and as side dish broccolini with chilli flakes and Parmesan. All dishes were very good.

The highlight was the dessert, a Leggaria chocolate cheesecake.

We paid 36 GBP or ca. 46.10 Euro or 57.55 USD.

All dishes with the name Leggaria are more health conscious than the normal range on the menu.

We like Pizza Express's initiative to offer lower calorie and gluten free products.

Another reason is the good value and consistency - no matter where we went to so far be it in the UK or Ireland (Pizza Express took over the Milano chain, but didn't change the name.), we always received good service and good food.

We will visit this branch and others in the future again.

Restaurant Milano Dublin, Ireland

Milano is a staple in our life since we are living in Dublin. There are three outlets one at Temple Bar, one at the IFSC and one at Dawson Street.

We came fresh back from Dubai and wanted originally go to the one at Temple Bar, but the restaurant had closed for renovation, so we went to the next convenient location which is at Dawson Street.

During the Celtic Tiger we wanted to try Milano at Dawson Street, but were told at the time they were fully booked and no table was available. The space was essentially empty, so we felt they didn't want our business and had avoided this branch until now, essentially a few years past since then.

This time around we were greeted warmly and immediately brought to a table. The restaurant was buzzing and had undergone a renovation. The walls depicted famous Irish writers, like James Joyce, and excerpts from their books or poems.

We decided to have a bottle of still water, two orange juice, one Risotto Fresco, one Pizza Romana Pollo ad Astra, and as dessert two scoops of ice cream (strawberry and chocolate) and one summer fruit pudding. There was a special offer we took avail off. Our green tea and hot chocolate were free, because we ordered dessert.

As always Milano wasn't a let-down. The staff was friendly, efficient and knowledgeable, for example one of us chose a different pizza after he was advised the one he had in mind was very spicy, as in too spicy. Good choices were made.

Our bill was 50.45 Euro (ca. 63 USD).

We will return again if we are looking for a good and freshly made pizza.

Esteemed

Kristin Henriksen sighed. She dreaded going to the dinner her mother had organized. There were going to be a few of her cousins and friends of her mother - a girlie thing. Her mother Helena and the rest were all thin and attractive. Kristin was voluptuous. She had to endure comments about how fat she was or was teased and given odd advise on how to lose weight. It knocked Kristin's self-esteem down.

Encountering the new Chief Security Officer of the company she worked for changed Kristin's perception of herself.
Coldham Fintan Noose III and she were introduced by Rory Rosales, the head of HR.

Later Fin, as Mr. Noose wanted to be called, flirted with Kristin while waiting for his appointment with Kristin's boss Trace Unger. Trace caught them but didn't comment.

One evening she was more than surprised when she was invited to a private dinner by Fin. It was intimate and only another couple, friends of Fin's wife Frieda, had joined them. Fin flirted again with Kristin. It seemed Frieda didn't mind at all and maybe even egged him on. When the other couple left, Kristin stayed. Before starting anything Fin had admired Kristin's figure and complimented her on her curves. Frieda also said she liked her boobs and well-rounded behind. Frieda was bisexual, but she accepted Kristin wasn't into girls. Fin was one lucky guy, because both women focused their attention on him. Based on Fin's character Kristin was surprised he liked being at the receiving end of anal sex. Fin was lying on the side in the middle of the bed. Frieda was at his back, penetrating him with her strap on, while Fin moved inside Kristin, who was facing him. The sex was amazing. All were satisfied and agreed to repeat it at some stage.

The encounter built up Kristin's confidence.

As always Kristin's mother needed help with the dinner preparations. It was expected of Kristin to give Helena a hand. Adrienne, Kristin's cousin, had joined them. Helena and Adrienne were chatting about which star had gained or lost weight. Kristin wasn't sure if it was for her "benefit". On the other side Adrienne was only fifteen and of course into fashion, make up and stars.
While Adrienne prepared the salad and Helena the main course Kristin made her famous mushroom ragout as a starter. When the ragout was nearly ready the rest of the guests arrived.

All being seated and having their drinks, they caught up with each other. Lori, a friend of Helena and only a few years older than Kristin, commented Kristin looked radiant. Kristin's cousin Brandy couldn't agree less. Kristin had lost a bit weight thanks to shagging more or less regularly with either Fin and Frieda or just Fin. They still showed their appreciation of Kristin's looks. It encouraged Kristin and let her feel more secure about her own body. She didn't react to Brandy's jibe. The subject, thank goodness, changed again to the newest fashion trends. "I've bought a mini skirt. It's black and really, really short." Adrienne said. "Of course it wouldn't look good on you, Kristin." Her cousin Renae added dismissive. Kristin knew what looked good on her and what didn't. Renae's comment hurt, but Kristin didn't react.

The starter was a success and Kristin was praised for it. Helena's entree, a venison meat loaf with carrots, green beans and Adrienne's salad, followed. Cider and white wine was free flowing. There were a few more barbed comments from the others, especially when Kristin took a second helping of the meat loaf. "I see the pounds already piling!" Reva, a friend of Helena, said sarcastic. "You will never find a man, if you are too fat." Michelle, another friend of Kristin's mother added. Kristin had enough. She dropped her fork with a loud clank. The conversation around her went dead. "I have enough of all of you! Just for your information I don't care if I don’t' get a man because I'm fat! There are some out, who love curves and being thin didn't help you keep your men, did it, Lori? In future I don't want to hear about eating nothing, following the cabbage diet, South Beach diet, Atkinson’s or whatever else is out there! You have made me feel bad about myself long enough, that's over now! Either you take me for who I am or leave me alone. Is that understood?" There was stunned silence for a while. Kristin expected an angry retort, but to her surprise Helena got up and hugged Kristin awkwardly. "I'm sorry. It was never my intention. I simply thought you need an incentive to get fit and healthy." "There are better ways to motivate me, Mom. I would have appreciated your support much more, but I'm happy the way I am." "I only fear you get diabetes or suffer a stroke when you are older, because of your diet..." "Mom, I'm eating a varied and healthy diet. The only thing I have to work on is getting more active..." "Why don't you join a fitness center?" Kristin's cousin Jerri suggested. "It's boring." "I go regularly to a Zumba class. Would you like to come and join me?" Jerri number two, a friend of Helena's, invited. "It involves dancing and aerobics, doesn't it? Adrienne asked. "Yes. It's fun and burns a lot of calories." "As you know I'm a cheer leader. You could look into that too." Adrienne offered. Swimming, Pilates, Boot camp training, boxing or kick boxing were other suggestions. Michelle and Lori were less supportive and had their doubts Kristin was able to change. They said Kristin would always be fat, because she wasn't going to get her lame ass off the couch. Kristin told them their snide remark was out of place. The other two didn't back down, so there were tensions in the air. Kristin hoped that her mother would support her for the first time in her life and wasn't disappointed. "Kristin is an adult and if she's happy how she is, we should leave her be." Kristin was very proud, but it didn't go down well with Helena's friends, who tried to make Helena decide between her daughter and them. "Blood is thicker than water! My daughter is always going to win over outsiders. It's up to you if this is a reason to forget about the good times we had or not." Grumbling the two friends stayed, but they were disgusted with Helena's lack of back bone and that Kristin was standing up for herself.

Kristin found an activity she really liked beside sex. Frieda, Jamie Lu, Fin's PA and friend of the Nooses, and Kristin went wall climbing one afternoon. It was fun, exhilarating and a challenge. Frieda wasn't such a big fan, but Jamie Lu and Kristin were hooked, so the two went regularly. While Jamie Lu was always trim, Kristin shed more pounds. Kristin had never felt better then after being taking up an activity and even started to take part in competitions. Her favorite was pitching herself against another climber. This type of wall climbing was called dual competition, because it used a mix of lead and speed discipline. An identical, parallel route was laid out for both competitors and whoever reached the top first won. Kristin never came in first place, but sometimes was in the top ten. It made Kristin very happy when her mother found time come to a comp and cheer her on. Their relationship changed for the better and they spent more time with each other, going even shopping together.

Ibn Battuta Mall & Cinnabon Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Ibn Battuta Mall is one of our favorite malls. It is located near Jebel Ali and very easy to reach by Metro or of course car/taxi and even by bus.

It is appealing to us, because the whole building is dedicated to the travels of the 9th century explorer Ibn Battuta. Each section of the mall is designed after a country/empire or region Ibn Battuta visited.

There are also exhibits, describing how navigation, water clocks and other things functioned in the past, so the mall combines education, architecture and retail very well. It has a cinema, a Geant supermarket and a food court beside retailers like Bed, Bath & Beyond, Coton and Max.

At the moment an extension of 200 shops and restaurants is on-going.

A Carluccio's has newly opened.

We strolled a bit, but also did some shopping and had a snack at Cinnabon.

The staff was happy to have us and very friendly.

We had two Mochalata and two classic cinnamon rolls. At first the snack was great, but after a certain time both the drinks and rolls turned cloyingly sweet. Our tastes must have changed a bit over the years and next time we will share a large roll.

The cost was 65 AED (ca. 14.05 Euro or ca. 17.75 USD).

The Ibn Battuta Gate Hotel - operated by Moevenpick - is just across the road from the mall and a visit would be for us incomplete if not going there.

Next time in Dubai we will return to this mall via the Metro Dubai and explore the extension in the future, enjoy the atmosphere and shop a bit.

02.11.2014 IDA from 2013 - Polish Movie

Written  by  Rebecca Lenkiewicz & Pawel Pawlikowski

Directed by Pawel Pawlikowski

Starring Agata Trzebuchowska, Agata Kulesza, Dawid Ogrodnik

Plot: Agata Trzebuchowska, making a powerful debut) is required to visit her Aunt Wanda, her only surviving relative, before taking her final vows. Her hard-living aunt is a proud member of the Communist Party, and a judge whose fervent prosecution of enemies of the state has earned her the nickname ‘Red Wanda’. Initially wary of each other due to their vast differences, their relationship is complicated by Wanda’s revelation that Anna was once Ida, born to Jewish parents of whom no trace remains. In search of her origins, Anna travels into the Polish countryside with her aunt, seeking a connection to the family she never knew, her faith tested in this and other, more earthly ways. Beautifully shot, Pawlikowski’s spare and affecting film is a strong addition to Polish cinema’s body of work examining the country’s troubled history.

09.11.14 Playtime from 1967 - French Movie

Written by Jacques Tati, Jacques Lagrange & Art Buchwald

Directed by Jacques Tati

Starring Jacques Tati

Plot: Taking over three years and costing 17 million francs to make, Jacques Tati’s Playtime was by far the director’s most ambitious and fully realised film project. Shot on a vast and stylised purpose-built set known as Tativille, the film portrays a modernist Paris dominated by high-rises all cast in glass and polished metal. Reprising his role as the tragi-comic Monsieur Hulot, a mostly solitary and silent figure, Tati appears only peripherally and yet is as close as we get to a protagonist.
The only other mainstay is a young American tourist called Barbara with whom Hulot shares a subtle and beautifully drawn connection. But attention here is much more on the balletic movement of people through space, and, particularly in the riotous and intricate restaurant scene, several incidents often occur on screen at once, making this an extraordinary cinematic experience like no other. (Notes by Alice Butler.)

08.12.14 Stations of the Cross from 2014 - German Movie

Written by Dietrich Brueggemann & Anna Brueggemann

Directed by Dietrich Brueggemann

Starring Hanns Zischler, Birge Schade, Florian Stetter, Franziska Weisz, Ramin Yazdani, Lucie Aron, Moritz Knapp, Klaus Michael Kamp, Lea van Acken, Georg Wesch

Plot: Maria (Lea van Acken) is a devout 14-year-old Catholic girl counting down the days to her confirmation. She is determined to devote her life to Jesus and longs to attain sainthood. Encouraged by her fundamentalist family, and just like Jesus on the road to Golgotha, Maria embarks on a fraught path measured out in 14 stations and leading to her own sacrifice, resolutely resisting being distracted from her course, despite attracting attention from Christian (Moritz Knapp), a boy she meets at school.
Filmmaker Dietrich Brüggemann presents each chapter of Maria’s story in static, single shots, each incident framed impeccably, and it is an arresting and inventive device that serves the intensity of the drama. Stations of the Cross is a rigorous examination of radical faith and devotion, a study of the dangers of unquestioning dogma that is daring, intelligent, and slyly humourous.

07.01.15 The Green Ray (Le Rayon Verte) from 1986

Written by Eric Rohmer and Marie Riviere

Directed by Eric Rohmer

Starring Marie Riviere

Plot:
It is summer and Delphine is stranded in Paris just when everybody else is leaving the city for their holidays. She has just ended a relationship and she is desperate for an escape. A number of pitying invitations result in unsatisfying trips to Cherbourg, to
the Alps and to the beach. Her parents try and persuade her to travel to Ireland, but she doesn’t want to spend time with them.
Delphine appears desperate for love, for romance or just for a connection, but her manner insists that she wants those things
on her own terms. Rohmer’s acute, earnest observation on relationships and feminine behaviour remains fascinating and relevant, in no small part because of Marie Rivière’s irresistible performance as Delphine. In a largely improvised film, her presence is believable, precious, honest and beautiful, affording The Green Ray a disarming daringness.

Promotion

Philip Maxwell felt utterly relaxed. He had been away for two weeks. His peace of mind was shattered within seconds.

The new Chief Security Officer Coldham Fintan Noose III had been attacked while Philip had been on vacation. He had been knocked unconscious and beaten up while on duty, stopping a burglary in its tracks. Fin, as the CSO wanted to be called, had asked Philip to come and visit him at his home, when he was finally able to reach him. Philip wondered what Fin wanted from him.

Philip felt a bit awkward, when he arrived with his beat up Honda CR-V at Fin's very posh neighborhood. He found the house easy and was welcomed by Frieda, Fin's wife. She was a surprise. Fin was light ash blonde and of European descent. He preferred to wear only black designer clothing. Philip thought it was an Italian brand. Frieda was Latina and wore a simple jeans and a colorful t-shirt. She looked very young. Philip liked Frieda immediately. She was warm, seemed down to earth and less stern than Fin. Frieda explained Fin was asleep. They heard screams. "Uhm, it seems Fin has a nightmare. I'll better wake him up." Before rushing off Frieda offered Philip to take a seat at the kitchen table. Philip hadn't been comfortable for long before he jumped up in fright. Something had touched him. Overcoming his shock Philip checked under the table and found a toddler, grinning broadly at him. The little girl looked very much like Frieda, so Philip assumed she was Frieda's daughter. Philip burst out laughing, amused he had been frightened by a small kid. Frieda returned at that moment and said smiling: "I see you have met Casey already." "How old is your daughter?" Philip asked. "17 months." "Casey is really cute." "Yes, and a lot of work too." Frieda replied with a smile. "By the way Fin is ready for you." Fin had come down to the living room, where Frieda brought Philip to. Fin was looking rough around the edges and not as well groomed as he usually did. Philip had a hard time not to stare at the cast on Fin's left leg or the fading bruise on Fin's cheek. He couldn't see any further injuries, but he noticed Fin was in pain. Fin didn't pause for small talk. He came straight to the point. "Where have you been on the night between 01.00 am and 02.00 am of the 19th of August?" Philip understood immediately what this was all about. He bristled and in his anger jumped up from the sofa. "Come on, you can't be serious!" Fin just looked calmly at Philip. Cooling down somewhat Philip replied: "I was in Portland. At first at a Dinosaur Jr. concert and then hanging out with some friends at a bar. I think we were there until two or so." "Alright." "That's it?!" "Yes, it was just pro forma. I know you're not the one, who broke into the company and attacked me." Philip was outraged. "Why are you asking then?" "Mr. Powell wanted an alibi." Philip blew through his nose. His uncle and CEO of the company he worked for, suspected naturally him being behind the break ins and fraud, since Philip's father was a criminal. Philip had enough and wanted to quit. He said as much to Fin. He also said resigned: "I guess you are going to investigate behind my back again if it's true what I'm saying." Fin had done some back ground checks when he heard from a "source" Philip’s father was a robber and serving a long prison sentence. Philip thought the source had been his uncle Stanford Powell. "No, but if you could provide me with the invoice of the hotel you have stayed at..." "Like hell I will!" "Look, if you do what I ask you for, I might can do you a favor too." "Really?" Philip asked sarcastic. "Really." Fin replied with a grin. "And what would that favor be?" "I'll have to get Mr. Powell first around to support my idea... If I'm successful it would definitely proof to everyone that you aren't guilty." Philip looked up startled. Someone had spread the rumour he was behind the crime and a few co-workers ostracized him. He suspected the situation was worse now thanks to the new burglary attempt. Philip wondered how Fin knew about it. The offer was tempting. "I'd like to see how you get my uncle around." Now it was Fin's turn to be surprised. "He's what?" "My uncle. My mother and he are siblings. He is seven years younger than Mom." "Okay." If Fin had come to his own conclusions why Stanford had been so adamant Philip was the thief and so totally unwilling to promote his nephew within the company he didn't show it. Philip promised to drop his evidence by.
Frieda knocked and told them dinner was ready. Philip didn't expect the invitation was extended to him and another reason he wanted to leave was his dislike for burritos and chili con carne. He believed Frieda was Mexican, where the majority of Hispanic immigrants to the US came from. Philip's experience with Latinos was limited, because they only made up around six per cent of Seattle's population. Since Frieda and Fin didn't take no for an answer, Philip agreed to have dinner with the couple. He offered to help Fin up, who told him it was okay. It seemed Fin had experience with crutches and didn't need support. The dinner was a pleasant surprise. The setting was simple, but elegant. Casey was already sitting in her high chair and couldn't wait for the meal to begin. She made urgent noises and stretched her arms out, when Frieda served Philip first. Fin told Casey soothing: "Guests come first, darling. Don't worry, it's your turn next." Casey quietened down as soon as she received her portion of the Khmer beef salad. It was delicious Philip admitted and not what he had expected. When he asked where the recipe came from, Frieda told him they had picked it up during their honey moon trip two years earlier. Turning to Fin Philip asked about the nightmare. Fin said short: "I don't want to talk about it." Frieda gave Fin a concerned look, but he ignored it. Philip cleared his throat and instead talked about the first part of his vacation he had spent at Salmon River, just a little over an hour outside Portland, with his grandfather. They both loved fishing. Fin admitted freely he was an urbanite and didn't care very much about fishing. He and Frieda liked water sports, especially scuba diving. After dinner Philip went home, wondering why he had agreed to hand over evidence he had been really in Oregon and how Fin was going to proof to the public Philip wasn't the bad guy and convince Uncle Stanford of it too.

Philip dropped off the invoice he had received for his stay in Portland the next day.

Three days later Stanford Powell's Personal Assistant arranged an appointment with Philip. Stanford was pretending to be busy, when Philip entered. "Take a seat." Stanford said, not looking up from his papers. He let his nephew stew for a few minutes before he paid any attention to him. "You are lucky you have such a staunch supporter in Mr. Noose. He's 100% sure you are innocent and since he is the authority in his field I trust him." Philip gave his uncle a baleful glare. Their relationship was difficult. Philip had found out by coincidence that Stanford had only given him a fulltime job in return of Philip's mother cleaning Stanford's house for free for years. It had made Philip resentful, because Stanford could have easily afforded a cleaning lady if he had wanted to. Philip’s mother Deana had a hard enough life in the first place and Philip thought they all were family, so Stanford should have supported him and Deana without making demands. Returning to the present he didn't reply. Stanford sighed. "Mr. Noose suggested the company should look for an additional security guard. For the moment it's only when one of the other team members is sick or on holiday. You will of course receive full training if you agree to take on the position and it includes night shifts. The position might turns into something more permanent, if it proves to make sense. Would you be interested in being our reserve security guard?" Philip wanted to refuse out of rebellion, but decided to take on the job. First it would rankle Stanford, Philip had finally managed to escape the warehouse - if only partly; second it was a challenge and third it definitely proved Philip had nothing to do with the break ins. The Chief Security Officer wouldn't invite the suspected perpetrator to join his team. So much was for sure.

Fin had been right. People, who had eyed Philip before with suspicion, were suddenly back to treating Philip as usual.

For Philip it meant spending a lot of time with Fin, Aurelio and Adrain from the security team.
Philip found out soon why Fin had been selected to replace Michael Kuraite, the former CSO. He was younger than all team members, but seemed to have quite a lot of experience in security matters. He was better than the others and saw things they overlooked. Philip realized Fin could get easily into the mind-set of a criminal and wasn't surprised when Fin solved who was really responsible for the theft and fraud. It was a bigger shock that nearly all the management had to be replaced and Fin's announcement he was going to leave the company. He chose his successor, which caused a few tongue wagging. It had always been assumed the new CSO would be Ty Hansen, Michael Kuraite's and later Fin's deputy. Instead Fin selected Sammy Metz, another security guard. It meant Philip was offered a permanent position on the security team, which he accepted. Sammy proved to be a worthy successor - it was no wonder having been handpicked and intensely trained by Fin before he left. Philip liked his new job. It was sometimes boring, but could be also demanding and exciting. Philip had never thought he had a talent for it and surprised himself and his uncle. They never were very close, but they started to trust and respect each other. When Sammy retired he suggested to Stanford to promote Philip. He had groomed the CEO's nephew any way and was glad when the CEO agreed to make Philip Chief Security Officer. At first Philip was worried if he would be able to fulfil the demands of the job. Slowly he grew into the position and if he needed help he knew he could always contact Sammy or Fin, with whom he had stayed in contact over all those years.

The Junction Restaurant & Bar, Holiday Inn Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom

During our stay at the Holiday Inn Belfast we had dinner at the Junction Restaurant & Bar.

The space has two sections: Near the entrance is the bar - there is sometimes live music - and the restaurant.

When we arrived the bar was busy with a large ladies group. The restaurant was only occupied with a family.

Since there was no Maître de, we chose our table in the contemporary space.

There were floor to ceiling windows along one side allowing day light to flood the room.

At first we had some difficulty getting the attention of one of the waitresses, because they were kept busy by the group. The wait was worth it, though and the service attentive from then on.

The menu was a mix of classic, modern, local and international dishes.

We ordered two orange juice, one glass of Chilean Rose, a glass of Tia Maria without ice, two salmon fillets with mango salsa and a salad consisting of green leaves, sun dried tomatoes and anchovies, a sticky toffee pudding and a fruit salad.

The presentation was very nice, for example the mango salsa came in its own little steel bucket.

The wine was surprisingly dark colored. It was more red than rose. It was dry with fruity notes and to my liking.

The salmon was cooked to perfection and the salsa finger licking good.

The salad was nicely balanced between being sweet and salty.

The toffee pudding was very good too.

The bill came in at slightly under 57 GBP (ca. 72.40 Euro or ca. 91.90 USD).

Would we recommend this restaurant to a friend? YES!
Would we eat at The Junction Restaurant again? YES.

Holiday Inn Belfast, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom

In October we spent a long weekend (3 nights, 4 days) in Belfast, Northern Ireland.

We took a long-distance bus [Translink Goldline] from Dublin's Bus Arras Station to Belfast Great Victoria Street Bus Station. A return ticket cost 25 Euro (ca. 32.10 USD).

From Great Victoria Street Station in the center of town the Holiday Inn Belfast was only a very short walk - ca. 10 minutes - away. It is in a good location, neighbors are the BBC Northern Ireland, RTE, a Nando's and a Pizza Express.

The hotel made a solid impression and was well integrated.

When entering the first thing we encountered was a pink bench and a large modern painting. The Junction Restaurant and the Bar which serves Starbucks was to the left and the reception and elevators to the right.

The Holiday Inn has also a spa, fitness center, hair salon and the only hotel swimming pool in Belfast.

Check in was quick and friendly.

We had booked a King Executive Room. All executive rooms and suites are located on the 7th floor. On the landing a free coffee/tea station is waiting, where you can help yourself to your favorite beverage.

Our room overlooked the BBC. It was large and contemporary with Asian touches, for example  dragon tapestry and shutters. The wooden head board reminded us of a tropical island.

There was a huge open wardrobe, a mini fridge (unstocked), a comfortable king sized bed, a coffee table and two chairs, a writing desk and large TV with regional channels.

The color scheme was brown, red, lilac and grey.

The photographic artwork featured important Belfast landmarks we all visited during our stay (The Titanic Belfast, the City Hall and Victoria Square Shopping Center).

There were tea and coffee making facilities, free water and snacks, a Terry's Orange Milk Chocolate bar, a Nutri-Grain Fruity Breakfast Bar Apple and an Acti-Snack+ Mangos, which was replaced daily, even so it stated these were only welcome amenities, a very nice touch.

The Executive Room also included a free movie from the pay per view section per night. At first the hotel had problems with their TV system, so when we wanted to use the free movie option it didn't work. Finally it was available, but we were too tired and the other nights too busy to watch a film.

The free internet was fast and reliable.

Our bathroom was large and completely tiled. We liked the rainbow colored mosaic tiles in the bath tub / shower combination especially.

There was also a sink and toilet.

The amenities were from The White Company and contained rose, Jasmin and nerolis. We know The White Company from other hotel stays and like the products.

Another perk of an Executive Room was no tray charge for in room dining and 20% off food and beverage.

We had in room breakfast and dining. Once we went to the Junction Restaurant for dinner.  A review of this is going to follow soon.

Continental breakfast was 12.90 GBP per person (ca. 16.40 Euro or ca. 21 USD).

There was a tick sheet on the room we filled out. For 3 GBP more hot items were also available.

We chose coffee, orange juice, whole wheat toast, jam and honey, cheese, fruit salad and fruit yogurt. It set us up nicely for the day and was delivered on time by a friendly member of staff. We were glad we used the in room dining option, because the hotel can get extremely busy with meetings and conferences. In our case the heads of all universities and colleges of Northern Ireland were meeting.

Our in room dinner consisted of a large bottle of still water, one Tia Maria, one starter sized House Salad, one chicken, roasted pepper and Cooleeney Brie Panini and a fruit salad. We liked the quality and flavors. The portion size was generous too. Waiting time was a bit long with 45 minutes. The cost was 24.35 GBP (ca. 31 Euro or ca. 39.10 USD).

We enjoyed our stay tremendously, using the excellent location to explore Belfast. City Hall, shopping, Ulster Hall, St. Malachy's Catholic Church and the Engine Room Gallery are a very short stroll away.

Too soon check out approached. It was again very busy and we had to wait about ten minutes. Check out itself was done very quickly.

We would return, because the staff is efficient, helpful and friendly, the rooms are beautiful and comfortable, the food is good and the location is just perfect for our needs. The hotel represents good value too.

Pizza Hut Bur Dubai, Dubai, United Arab Emirates

On our first night at the Holiday Inn Bur Dubai - Embassy District - we went out to explore our surroundings and had dinner at Pizza Hut Bur Dubai, just opposite Bur Juman Shopping Mall.

It was already busy when we arrived, but a space was found for us quickly.  There were lots of families. Take away was also doing a brisk business.

We ordered two orange juice, two pieces of fire cracker chicken rolls, a foot long chicken lasagne and one medium Chicken Lover pizza. All was delicious.

Even though, the staff was extremely busy, our food arrived relatively quick and the order was correct.

The waiters were friendly too.

We enjoyed our meal, but thought the noise volume was quite high, so it's nothing for you if you are looking for a quiet time.

We paid 83 AED (ca. 17.65 Euro or ca. 22.60 USD).

We would return again since we like Pizza Hut and have tried different ones around the world.

Holiday Inn Bur Dubai - Embassy District, Dubai, United Arab Emirates

After spending one night at the InterContinental Residence Suites Festival City, Dubai, to relax we took a taxi to the Holiday Inn Bur Dubai - Embassy District for our five night stay.

We arrived after check in time, but our room wasn't ready yet, so we were invited to go to Anwar Restaurant and have something to drink and eat. Since we weren't hungry, we just had juices.

The check in was completed by the reception manager.

The lobby was extremely busy with a large Indian group arriving at the same time as us.

After having been handed over our key cards we went to our room. The bell captain arrived at the same time with our luggage.

We had booked an Executive King Bed Room overlooking one of the courtyards.

There was just one window, making the room mellow and elegant. It is a great space to represent for business or relax with a family.

The room was very large with separate sitting area, including a sofa, chair, coffee table, writing desk and luggage rack.

There was also a hallway with a large wardrobe.

The bed was large and comfortable with a credenza in front and a flat screen TV, offering thirty five international and regional channels.

There was also a minibar containing Coca Cola, Sprite, Johnny Walker Red Label, Chivas Regal and other drinks.

The wooden furniture was dark and had beautiful inlays, which continued throughout the room. The upholstery of the sofa and chair was kept in gold tones.

The red carpet had a circle of life theme and the artwork, depicting autumn landscapes, integrated well with the color scheme of the room.

The bath room was medium in size with bath tub / shower combination, Lauf Pro sink, bidet and toilet.

The bath room amenities were by Ecokind. We hadn't had them before, but liked them.

As IHG Rewards Club members we also received free breakfast at the Two Guineas Pub, free internet access, free daily newspaper, 2 PM late check out if available - we didn't need it, since we had an early flight back home - and room upgrade, subject to availability. We didn't receive one, because the hotel was fully booked due to the conference taking place, but we enjoyed our room and had consciously chosen it in the first place.

A welcome card and gift was waiting for us - in this case a fruit basket.

Turn down was done every night and included replenishing of the bottles of water and camel milk chocolates on the bed.

Additionally there was a 15% discount at the Anwar Restaurant, the Two Guineas Pub or if using the mini bar and in room dining.

Beside the pub and restaurant there is also a cafe and Murjan Pool Bar.

The hotel has meeting facilities, a pool and fitness center.

We loved taking the bubble lifts, revealing views into the stunning atrium with a lot of gold decoration and Anwar.

Every morning we made our way to breakfast. The choice was good with international, Indian and Arabic dishes.

The staff was attentive and friendly, remembering where we liked to sit and what drinks we wanted. We were also offered omelettes made to order and a take away breakfast on our last morning was easily arranged, because we had to leave for the airport before breakfast was available.

We used in room dining twice. We had Spaghetti Bolognese on each occasion. The portions were huge, so we weren't left hungry for sure. The 15% discount was calculated into the bill I had to sign when our server delivered the pasta. It was 98 AED (ca. 21.05 Euro or 26.70 USD) for two.

On one evening we received an invitation to the managers reception. We had already plans, so we couldn't make it. We appreciated the thought, though.

The location was ideal and one of the reasons we chose the Holiday Inn. It is just a few minutes’ walk from Bur Juman Shopping Mall and the Metro station with the same name, giving easy access to the city.

Check out arrived too soon. It was done fast and correct.

We were very happy during our stay. The food was very good, the room was inviting, comfortable and beautifully furnished and the staff couldn't have been more helpful, friendly and efficient.

When we are back in Dubai we definitely are going to return to this hotel for a further few nights.

Favors

Stanford Powell was giving his sister Deanna Maxwell a penetrating stare. She was good looking, honey blond and blue eyed. She was also the black sheep of the family. And now she was here to ask for a favor. Stanford was younger and the whole opposite of Deanna. She was attracted to bad boys and had married one. Stanford thought about the scandal this had caused and shuddered. Deanna's husband was serving a twenty year prison sentence for numerous robberies. To the Powell family's dismay Deanna stood behind Donald and refused to divorce him. Stanford considered to reject Deanna's request. Weighing up the consequences he gave her a disgusted look and said: "I'll take him, but if Philip makes one misstep, he's fired." Deanna squealed in delight, ran around the big mahogany writing desk and gave her brother a big hug and kiss. Stanford sighed. What had he done? Invited a future criminal into his company? Stanford feared his nephew Philip was going the same way as Donald.

It had been a hard time for Philip. Everyone treated him and his mother like personas non grata. Before his father's trial Philip had been very much involved at his school's theatre group and other after school activities. Since Philip's classmates, most of his friends and relatives believed Philip was worthless, he began to withdraw and hang out with the wrong crowd. It was a knee jerk reaction. Philip appreciated his mother and his paternal grandfather Bobby were concerned about him.

Bobby woke Philip's interest in fishing. They went off together every other weekend and sometimes during summer vacation.
Philip enjoyed the peace and quiet and being in close contact with nature. It always released his stress levels.

Philip was encouraged by his mother to work for his Uncle Stanford during vacations. Philip was wary, because the Powell's looked down at Deanna and him.
Of course Stanford treated Philip with disdain, but to Philip's surprise he realized he was good at his job and he liked it too. The rest of his co-workers were nice. It seemed Stanford had only told management about Philip's father's conviction and the others didn't know. Bobby's and Deanna's positive influence and his warehouse job kept Philip out of trouble.

When Philip held his high school degree in hand he was disappointed. His mother told him there wasn't any money to go to college. Philip had expected as much, but it still made him sad. He had hoped he could go to an acting school. Deanna promised Philip a job though, and he could guess where and what it was going to be.

Deanna went again to Stanford for help. This time around he wanted something in return and asked Deanna to clean his home for free the next three years twice a week. Another condition was Philip's good behavior. Deanna vouched for Philip and reminded her brother about how well Philip had done during his stints at Foreman Scandinavia Import. Stanford could only grumble and asked surly: "So, do you agree to the terms?" Deanna sometimes disliked Stanford very much. She already worked four part time jobs, including cleaning houses, babysitting and tutoring. Her family wasn't supportive, even so there would have been enough capital to help her, but she was being punished for marrying the wrong guy.
Deanna's father had told her in clear terms she had made her bed and now had to lie in it.
Bobby tried very hard to help: Be it spending time with his daughter in law and grandson, money, if he could spare it, dealing with house repairs, supporting Deanna and Philip morally or parting with his wisdom.
When Deanna didn't reply immediately Stanford said gruff: "You know beggars aren't choosers, so what is your answer?" Deanna hated begging and had a hot reply on her tongue, but swallowed it. She could rant about her stupid brother later, but Philip's future depended on her, so she replied meekly: "Of course I'll do it." "Great!" Stanford gave Deanna a smile. It didn't reach his eyes. "Anything else?" He asked. Deanna shook her head and answered: "No." "Off you go then. We can talk about when you start at my home later. Send Philip on Monday to the HR department, where he can sign his contract." Deanna bit hard on her tongue. She hated it how Stanford treated her.

Over the years Stanford kept an eagle eye on his nephew. He was torn between feeling proud and dismay, because Philip was excelling as warehouse worker and should have been promoted, but somehow Stanford couldn't bring himself to admit Philip wasn't like Donald. His official excuse when he was approached by Philip's superior about Philip and making him deputy of the warehouse Stanford replied he didn't want to be accused of cronyism and Philip was way too young to hold such a position.

When someone started stealing in the company and also a hole in the book keeping was found, Stanford suspected Philip. When the police couldn't solve the mystery Stanford thought outside the box and engaged a cat burglar Coldham Fintan Noose III, the best in fact, to get to the bottom of the problems. Stanford was more than surprised when his new head of security didn't confirm his suspicion. Mr. Noose told him he had come to other conclusions but needed more evidence to support them. Stanford was impressed on the one side what Mr. Noose had achieved within a three months period, but was getting impatient, because he wanted to know who had betrayed him. Forcing himself to not press for answers he waited for the results. When they came Stanford was very disappointed in the persons involved, since they were not only employed by him, but he had counted them as his friends too.

Mezza Luna @ The InterContinental Residence Suites Festival City, Dubai, United Arab Emirates

During our stay at the InterContinental Residence Suites Dubai Festival City, we had dinner and breakfast at Mezza Luna.

The restaurant was designed in the same contemporary style as the lobby with two story floor to ceiling windows and black and white photographs.

Mezza Luna serves Italian cuisine.

There was an open kitchen and when we arrived there was a family and a few couples already dining.

The chef showed some kids how pizza was made as they watched.

DINNER:

We ordered one berry smoothie, one mango juice, one hot chocolate, one Piri Piri chicken pizza, one gnocchi with artichokes, cherry tomatoes and garlic parmesan sauce and a tiramisu to share.

The hotel is dry, so Mezza Luna doesn't serve alcohol.

The pizza had just the right amount of spiciness. It wasn't a scorcher, but hot enough.

The gnocchi dish was surprisingly light, considering the sauce was cream/cheese based. It was colorful and mild.

The tiramisu was served with coffee ice cream. All was delicious.

The bill came in at 200 AED (ca. 42.10 Euro or 54.50 USD).

BREAKFAST:

Breakfast was included in our rate
.
Cold items were served buffet style with a lot of Western and Middle Eastern choices, including fruit salad, lassi, cold cuts, cheese, bread and pastries and much more.

Hot items, coffee/tea and juices could be ordered from the waiter.

We had scrambled eggs with sausages.

We enjoyed the quality and freshness of both, breakfast and dinner.

We would gladly enjoy Mezza Luna again when staying next time at the InterContinental Residence Suites Dubai Festival City.

InterContinental Residence Suites Festival City, Dubai, United Arab Emirates

After long consideration we decided to relax after our flight from Dublin to Dubai at the InterContinental Residence Suites Dubai Festival City for one night.

Arriving very early in the morning we took a Lexus limousine, instead of a regular taxi to the hotel.
There was a bit of confusion, because there is also the InterContinental Hotel Festival City, but the Residence Suites are at a slightly different location and building. It might be best to tell the taxi driver to go to Marsa Plaza, where the suites are located.
We paid 62 AED (ca. 13.05 Euro or 16.90 USD).

Beside the InterContinental Residences, the Marsa Plaza also contains long stay apartments.

The location was ideal for us. The InterContinental Hotel and Crowne Plaza Festival City were just fifteen minutes walk away along the New Creek. From there it was only a stone throw to Festival City Shopping Mall.

The Residence's entrace was relatively small, compared to the seize of the building. The lobby was also small, but filled with daylight through high ceilings and offered contemporary design and had Sakura artwork. The reception and concierge were to the left. There was also a hallway leading to the prayer rooms, ATM and rest rooms.

To the right was the Cafe Deli and Mezza Luna Italian restaurant.

We didn't expect our room would be ready. We had sent an email to the hotel to advise them we would arrive at around 08.00 hours.

The receptionists were very friendly and asked us to take a seat in the lounge area while they checked if a room was available for us soon.

After waiting for about half an hour we could check in and were pleasantly surprised. A late check out at 14.00 hours was granted without problems either. We had booked the Weekend Rate, which included late check out until 4 PM and breakfast. The over night rate for a room or a Studio Suite was the same, so we booked the studio.

Our One bed Studio Suite was located on a higher floor as requested. We had views over the airport, two mosques and towards Sharjah.

The room was large and had a kitchen, large kingsized bed, a dining table, three chairs, a 50 in flat screen TV (with 196 channels), a shelf, small wardrobe and an unfurnished balcony.

The kitchen was marble tiled and had everything expect a microwave and tea towels. According to the manual on the shelf we should have had a microwave. Since we didn't intend to use it, it wasn't a problem.

The fridge wasn't stocked, beside several bottles of water and the residences are dry.

The TV channels were more than enough and should offer for every taste something.

The chairs and bed were all comfortable and the living/sleeping area carpeted with palm prints.

Overall the room had a homey feel as was to be expected since it was in a residence and was contemporary. The color scheme was inspired by the dessert.

On the shelf was a Time Out Dubai magazine, a directory, a form to join the InterContinental's Ambassador program, the spa menu of the InterContinental Hotel Festival City (massages start from 415 AED - that's about 87.35 Euro or 113 USD. A free shuttle bus to the sister hotel runs every ten minutes.) and the in room dining menu.

The bath room was large with a bath tub shower combination, marble tiles, granite, Toto toilet, bidet and a sink.

Bath room amenities were by Agraria.

The bath tub was a bit difficult to climb in and out. When using the shower the room turned into a steam room and at first we managed to flood the floor, because the protective glass divider wasn't water tight. After changing the dirctions of the spa shower head it was better.

Before napping we had in room breakfast. When I ordered Eggs Benedict I was offered to have smoked salmon instead of ham at no extra charge, since I love smoked salmon it was a done deal. Beside the Eggs Royal we ordered one hot chocolate, one large bottle of still water, one carrot juice, one water melon juice and one portion of pancakes with vanilla cream and fresh fruits. It was all delicious and the carrot juice smooth. The bill was 160 AED (ca. 33.70 Euro or ca. 43.60 USD).

After our nap we went exploring the hotel and the surrounding area.

On the 17th floor were the fitness center, jacuzzis and swimming pool and the pool bar located. The pool is clean cut, interesting lighted and has stunning views over Dubai. We could clearly see the Palazzo Versace across the creek.

We had dinner and breakfast at Mezza Luna.

The staff was efficient, knowledgeable and warm. They were always ready to offer help and services or if we wanted to, have a chat. They seemed genuinely interested in us.

Time went by quick and before we knew it was time to move to our second hotel in Dubai - the Holiday Inn Bur Dubai - Embassy District.

Would we return? Definitely. The location is perfect - very near to the airport and Festival City Shopping Center -,  the staff attentive and friendly, the room feels like a home and is comfortable and the cuisine outstanding.

Balfes @ The Westbury Hotel, Dublin, Ireland

After watching an Iranian movie called Willow and Wind at the Irish Film Institute we wanted to have brunch at Cafe Novo at the Westbury Hotel in Dublin, Ireland, which we visited a few times over the years.

To our surprise the name had changed to Balfes. That wasn't the only thing that was different. It had been renovated and there were some menu changes too. For example there was no longer French Toast on the menu.

The renovation was a success in our opinion and looked good. It had now a nice contrast in black and white, dark chairs and comfortable leather sofas.

The atmosphere was good with a lot of families with young children, who were very well behaved.

The staff recognized us immediately, but they were very busy. They were attentive, though, and always there when we needed them.

We ordered during Sunday brunch four chai latte, two fresh orange juice, one Eggs Benedict, one Eggs Royal, blueberry pancakes with bacon and maple syrup and mixed berries with champagne sabayon. Everything was fresh and delicious.

We paid 55.50 Euro, ca. 71.90 USD.

No matter if it's called Cafe Novo or Balfes we are going to be regular guests in the future.

Pano, Munich International Airport, Germany

Originally we planned to go to Kaefer's Bistro again at  Munich International Airport Terminal 2 on our way back from Dubai to Dublin. Unfortunately our gate was a different one, so we didn't have the chance, but we found Pano instead.

The design was contemporary and rustic.

It was self-service. There was a wide range of soups, sandwiches, fruit salads and cakes available.

The setting was restaurant style or a large communal table. Since it was busy we took the communal table.

We had one kiwi juice, one natural yogurt topped with fruits and one large slice of plum cake. All was very delicious, fresh and high quality.

The price was high, but fair, at 18.40 Euro (ca. 23.85 USD).

If we had to connect/depart again from the area H and we don't encounter Kaefer's Bistro, we will have here a meal.

Costa Coffee Dubai International Airport Terminal 1, United Arab Emirates

Before our return flight to Munich International Airport and on to Dublin, we made a stop at Costa Coffee at Dubai International Airport Terminal 1, Concourse 1.

It was already busy and I had to wait a bit to order our drinks. Earlier we received a take away breakfast from the Holiday Inn Bur Dubai - Embassy District, so we weren't hungry and needed a pick me up, since we had a very early start at 3 a.m.

Normally we don't frequent Costa very often, because of previous experiences and the coffee being not to our taste.

This time around we weren't disappointed.

After ordering one bottle of Voss water and two cappuccinos, we were given a number and the waiter brought the drinks to our table when they were ready.
The coffee was strong and smooth, just as we like it. It just gave the jolt we needed.

The cost was 44 AED (ca. 9.30 Euro or 12.00 USD).

When we are in Terminal 1 at Dubai International Airport we will visit Costa again.

Kaefer Bistro Munich International Airport Terminal 2

I have been introduced to Kaefer thanks to my fiancé many, many years ago when we still lived in Germany. We are both fans and go to Kaefer whenever possible on our travels.

While we were waiting for our flight from Munich International Airport to Dubai International Airport we felt a bit peckish and made a stop at Kaefer's Bistro at Terminal 2.

The design is French bistro style with a few Bavarian touches. This time around the Oktoberfest was near, so ginger bread heart decorations reminded patrons about it.

The restaurant was full and we nearly didn't find a table.

We received our menus after waiting a bit. The Rhubarb Schorle caught our eyes, so we had two of those and a Frozen Caramel dessert to share, plus we had a hot chocolate each, served in a Kafer "hafferl" mug.

The schorle was very good and the dessert interesting. It was like Crème Caramel, but frozen and delicious and creative.

Even if the staff was extremely busy, they were very friendly and always there when needed.

Our bill came in at 22.10 Euro (ca. 28.60 USD).

We will return to this outlet, if we are at Munich International Airport Terminal 2 again in the future.

COA - Cuisine of Asia, Frankfurt International Airport Terminal 1

While we were connecting in Frankfurt for our flight to Munich and from there to Dubai, we had late lunch at Cuisine of Asia, short COA.

The restaurant offers pan Asian cuisine and is decorated in contemporary Asian design. We felt immediately attracted to it.

There was also an open kitchen, where Asian chefs prepared the dishes.

Floor to Ceiling Window tables gave views over the runway. They were already occupied, so we took a seat at the communal table.

The attentive staff brought the menu. They spoke fluently English.

We chose an Apple meets Carrot and one Thai Art Mocktail, Gado Gado chicken and Vietnamese stir fried noodles. The portions were big, tasty and fulfilling, so there was no room for dessert.

The meal cost 37.60 Euro (ca. 48.70 USD).

We would return any time, when we fly from Terminal 1 in Frankfurt.

Lufthansa flight Dublin - Frankfurt - Munich - Dubai - Dubai - Munich - Dublin

Originally we found a very good rate with Emirates to fly to Dubai, but then Lufthansa released lower rates. We thought it was better to pay less and fly more, so we booked Lufthansa.

Our first leg was from Dublin to Frankfurt International Airport, taking off shortly after midday. We had already checked in online the day before to choose our seats and print out the boarding passes.

The person at bag drop was friendly and our suitcase checked in quickly.

Security in Dublin was as always a breeze.

We had time for a quick stop at Starbucks before going to our gate.

During the flight we were offered non-alcoholic and alcoholic beverages, tea and coffee. There was also a vegetarian sandwich on offer, which I liked, but he not so much. The juices and water were very good.

The seat of the Airbus A321 took a while to get used to for me, but was comfortable then.

He was happy with the leg room. Even when the person reclined in front of him he had still enough space.

In Frankfurt we had a remote stand. There was a shower pouring down when we had to leave the plane. There was one bus in front and one in the back. The first was very full, so the driver didn't let anyone in. The second one wasn't willing to open the door, so we had to wait until the first bus left and the second moved into the correct position. A few of us were fuming. I think this should be a bit better planned and passengers allowed earlier on the bus if the weather is bad.

We had three hours to connect in Frankfurt, which was comfortable to have late lunch and browse the shops a bit.

Our plane, an Airbus A321 - upgraded due to demand from an A320 - between Frankfurt and Munich International Airport was also located at a remote stand.

We were served free drinks on the short flight to Munich.

In Munich we had another remote stand and also three hours connecting time before our overnight flight to Dubai.

Our plane to Dubai was an Airbus A330-300. It was a newer model, very comfortable and the inflight entertainment system easy to handle. It had a good choice, but I prefer Malaysia Airlines’ or Emirates' ICE. They have an even wider selection of movies and TV series and also a lot of World Cinema and Bollywood movies.

Dinner - chicken in our case - was served shortly after reaching cruising altitude and was tasty and healthy.

Afterwards liqueurs, coffee and tea made the rounds.

We both managed to catch around four hours sleep, which wasn't too bad.

No breakfast, but a snack was served with coffee or tea. It was a hard Florentine type biscuit and a bit meagre. We would have preferred at least a continental breakfast.

A day before our departure we checked in online again for our flight from Dubai to Munich and Munich to Dublin.

At the baggage drop off, which was very quiet, we were offered to change the seats on the leg between Munich and Dublin, but we had consciously chosen a seat at the back, because we wanted to avoid stress.

The aircraft, also an Airbus A330-300, but this time around was an older model on the flight between Dubai and Munich. The inflight entertainment system was hard to use and some passengers complained it didn't function at all. The flight wasn't fully booked, so a few could change seats.

The meal choice was pasta with mushrooms or chicken in paprika sauce, roasted vegetables and rice. We had the chicken, which we thought was okay. There was also a shrimp salad and a raisin cake, which he couldn't eat due to allergies.

There was a snack served with cream cheese, crackers and a muffin. Interesting enough there wasn't any cutlery offered, so seeing a neighbor's messy affair, I was more careful and found a solution to avoid that, by keeping the wrapper partly on. A knife would have been appreciated.

In Munich we had around two hours’ time to connect and had a remote stand again.

We slept partly on the Airbus A321 flight to Dublin and missed the food - it looked like the same sandwich we had had between Dublin and Frankfurt, but woke up in time for the drinks.

We liked the spotless toilets, the friendly service on all legs, ease of connections at the airports and the generous portions of Baileys and other drinks.

We think there is room for improvement in regards to head sets (Customers have to put on the soft part themselves and the headsets aren't keeping out the aircraft noise.), plus how a remote stand embarkment/disembarkment during bad weather is handled, a bigger breakfast "snack" when arriving in Dubai and offering cutlery for cream cheese.

Overall Lufthansa offers a good product, the food quality is good, the staff friendly and the inflight entertainment system is adequate, so we would use Lufthansa again on medium and long-haul routes, if the timings and value are right.
